# Local vs. National Tax Advisory Firms

Compare coverage, access, and delivery rather than assuming geography determines quality.

## Define why location matters

A local office can be valuable when your team prefers in-person meetings or needs close coordination with local professionals. A national firm may offer a broader bench or a delivery model that works across time zones. Neither characteristic establishes fit by itself. Ask what the location changes about your actual service.

If your company operates in several states, ask which professionals handle those jurisdictions. A firm located near headquarters may still have deep multistate experience. A firm advertising nationwide service may still need specialists for particular assignments. Confirm capabilities at the engagement level.

## Test accessibility

Ask how meetings are scheduled, how urgent requests reach the team, and what hours the assigned professionals work. For an owner traveling frequently, a reliable remote workflow may matter more than an office address. For a team that needs physical document assistance, local access may be important.

Compare communication samples and onboarding instructions. A polished national website does not guarantee an organized client experience, and a small local practice does not necessarily mean informal delivery. Evaluate the tools and service standards the team actually uses.

- Confirm your assigned contact and backup.
- Ask whether meetings are virtual, in person, or optional.
- Identify specialists who may join the engagement.

## Consider coordination costs

Your business may already use a bookkeeper, attorney, and financial adviser. Ask both local and national candidates how they collaborate with that group. The cost of duplicated requests and conflicting instructions can exceed the convenience of a particular meeting format.

A larger firm can have more internal specialties but also more handoffs. A smaller firm can offer continuity but may rely on external experts. Neither structure is inherently better. Ask how the lead keeps the work coherent and explains specialist fees.

## Choose for the next stage

Think about the company you expect to operate over the next two years. If you anticipate expansion, investor reporting, or a sale, ask whether the firm can support that change and when the scope would need to evolve.

Use geography as one selection criterion alongside experience, implementation, capacity, and scope clarity. The final choice should make it easy for the people running your business to obtain and act on advice.

- Next step: compare one local and one remote candidate using the same business brief.
