# Choosing a Tax Adviser for an Ecommerce Business

Evaluate marketplace records, inventory coordination, and geographic coverage.

## Explain the channels

List your selling platforms, direct website sales, inventory locations, fulfillment providers, and payment processors. Include the countries and states relevant to your operation without assuming that sales activity automatically creates a particular obligation. Let the specialist review the facts.

Ask whether the assigned team works with businesses using your actual channels. Experience with a small local retailer does not necessarily establish an efficient process for reconciling several marketplaces and payment systems.

## Test the data workflow

A candidate should explain how it receives sales, refund, fee, and inventory information and how that connects to your books. Ask who resolves discrepancies between platform reports and accounting records.

Give the firm a sample reporting package with confidential information removed. Ask what it can use, what is missing, and how often it needs updates. This practical test can reveal more than a list of software logos on a website.

- Identify the inventory record owner.
- Separate channel reports from bank deposits.
- Ask how new platforms enter the process.

## Clarify state and international work

Income tax advisory, sales tax work, and international reporting are distinct possible services. Ask which are covered, who delivers them, and when specialist involvement is required. A nationwide advertising claim should not replace a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction scope discussion.

Describe any overseas suppliers, owners, workers, or operations. If the firm cannot cover an area, ask how it coordinates a referral and combines the resulting analysis with the main engagement.

## Assess the growth fit

Ecommerce operations can add channels and locations rapidly. Ask how the engagement responds when fulfillment arrangements change or a new product line materially changes the business. Agree on triggers for contacting the adviser before year-end.

Choose a team that can work with your data and explain its coverage boundaries. A provider’s ability to turn fragmented records into a coherent review is central to a useful relationship.

- Next step: prepare a channel, inventory, and jurisdiction inventory for proposal interviews.
