# Choosing a Tax Adviser for Restaurants and Hospitality

Evaluate records, payroll coordination, ownership, and seasonal operating needs.

Tax Strategist Directory editorial desk · October 9, 2026 · AE-owned publication

## Describe the operating mix

Explain the locations, service models, management arrangements, and related properties. Include restaurants, event operations, lodging, or other activities separately where they differ. Ask the adviser which parts of that operating mix the assigned team understands.

The business’s systems matter. Describe point-of-sale reporting, payroll, inventory, and accounting responsibilities so the firm can give a realistic intake and service plan.

## Check the reconciliation workflow

Ask how the provider receives operating reports and confirms that the accounting records are suitable for the agreed work. If records need cleanup, clarify who performs it and how it affects the timeline.

Payroll and workforce matters often involve separate providers. Ask how the tax team coordinates questions with those providers and whether it covers the work you expect. Do not assume annual business filing includes every payroll or employment-related service.

- Identify the financial contact for each location.
- Ask how location openings and closures are tracked.
- Confirm which reporting services are outside scope.

## Consider the business calendar

A hospitality owner may have limited availability during peak seasons. Agree on review meetings and document deadlines that match the operating rhythm while leaving enough time for decisions.

Ask how projections are updated when results change materially or an expansion is delayed. A static plan can be difficult to use in a seasonal business. The engagement should explain the update process and the client information required.

## Choose for execution

Ask whether the firm provides written action lists and can work directly with your finance manager. Owners should not have to relay every technical question between providers.

Compare the proposed team’s experience, document process, and capacity around your calendar. The best relationship is one your operation can sustain during busy periods as well as during annual filing work.

- Next step: supply a location list, system summary, and seasonal decision calendar.
